Honestly you just need to narrow down to a niche that you want to focus on and then move forward with something. I spent less than a few hundred bucks when I first got started. Now years and years later, I’ll spend tens of thousands of dollars starting or buying something if I want to. But that’s the fun part is that unless you have a big inheritance everyone starts from zero and then tries to grow from there.
That’s a great tip Sean, thanks! I was thinking about what you said in your post about some companies not putting that they have affiliate links and you having to do some digging and there are couple of companies/authors who made products I love and keep using, but I’m not sure how to go ahead and ask about the affiliate link. I read the post you linked below about asking for guest blogging, which I thought was a must-read, and so, if you think of doing a follow-up on this one, would love to read some of your tips and do’s and don’t about this. Thanks again, Sean, you’re doing some very inspiring work here!
As you can see, affiliate marketing is a complex mosaic of many different partners and moving parts. When all of them are clicking, it can be a great source of new customers and an effective way to put the brand in front of new eyes.
For professional marketers or we can say the brand owners don’t have the prime goal of adding the affiliate links to earn money. Indeed, their motive is to provide the actual knowledge about the product to the first time users. They also promote their product, but affiliate income is not something that they rely on. For example, Bluehost will only upload its own product and services reviews for providing information to the new users.
When you include an link in your description be sure to say somewhere that it is an affiliate link. This can be in the form of a disclaimer at the bottom of your video description or as a parenthetical notation right next to the link. Also be sure to say what product it is for. Nobody likes being tricked into landing on iTunes or Amazon when they think they are going to an artist’s fan page or the ultimate zombie survival blog.
Some affiliate networks work with many brands/products so in those cases, you can be affiliates for multiple brands/products if you’re part of one affiliate network. Then there are other brands or products that have their own affiliate programs, so those you’ll have to manage separately. It can get sort of crazy to keep track. I use a spreadsheet with brand/product name, my affiliate link, whether or not the company is part of an affiliate network, etc. I wrote about it here. I hope that makes sense!

In this video Sean Cannell from Video Influencers covers How to Make Money on YouTube with Affiliate Marketing. If you are researching how to make more money on youtube then check out the tips on affiliates, youtube affiliates, and affiliate marketing programs, that are covered in this video!
The pay-per-sale and pay-per-click structures should be pretty obvious. Under a pay-per-lead arrangement, affiliates can get paid even if the merchant doesn’t generate any revenue. In most cases, this would involve earning a commission when a referral starts a free trial to a service. Even if they never pay for that service after the trial expires, the commission is earned.
When there are multiple affiliates involved in one transaction, payment gets much more complicated. Sometimes it’s even possible for affiliates to jump in at the last minute and claim commissions for customers brought in by other affiliates. Successful programs use multi-channel attribution to ensure the affiliates that create the most value get paid the most.
Late last year, I started hearing rumblings that Facebook was working on a series of free training resources for marketers. Since I run a website that once derived most of my revenue from training courses, this certainly got my attention.
These are just a few of the questions you should ask before running your video ads. You should be looking at metrics like engagement and play rate of your video content across channels before you determine what videos are worth putting money behind. As WordStream founder, Larry Kim, taught me during my time as a WordStream employee, always promote your BEST content (i.e. the top 1%!).
Hi, Nice article. I am not sure about the process though. I can understand, finding a niche. But, when it comes to affiliate programs I get a little lost. Would I be promoting someone else’s products? If so, no problem. I know I need to research high end products with gravity, are these products ones in certain stores, or companies, etc.?? If so, do I need to get permissions to be on an affiliate program with that company? Also, if it is products with a company, then how do I offer promotions on their products since they are not mine? Thank you, Nanette Vlahusich
Facebook had said in an earlier statement: “We recently discovered an error in the way we calculate one of our video metrics.” It added: “This error has been fixed, it did not impact billing, and we have notified our partners both through our product dashboards and via sales and publisher outreach. We also renamed the metric to make it clearer what we measure. This metric is one of many our partners use to assess their video campaigns.”
Difficult to get traffic: For a topic like “how to setup WordPress”, you will be entirely dependant on search engine traffic (either YouTube or Google/Bing). In such niches, getting traffic can be the hardest part.
Create a website about the topic that you have chosen. The key to succeeding with affiliate programs is to build a content-rich website with useful information built around a specific theme. Don’t just lazily throw up a quick site or blog and string a bunch of affiliate links all over your pages. You have to start by building credibility, and the best way to do that is to write about something you know a lot about.
Great post Leanne, it’s always great to see affiliate marketing in a concise and to the point fashion. When using analytics to track conversions, what factors do you feel are the most important to focus on for affiliate marketers? Where do you see a lot of affiliate campaigns fall flat in terms of optimizing their campaigns?
Start a website relevant to your niche. Before becoming an affiliate, many companies will want to know the URL of the website that you’ll use to sell their products. They do this because they want to ensure that the content on the website won’t hurt the company’s reputation.
If you already have your video hosted elsewhere, you might be tempted to simply link to the video in your post and advertisement. For instance, you’ve probably seen hundreds of videos on Facebook that have been shared from YouTube or similar video platforms. Some may even reside on the owner’s small business website.
Due to the miscalculated data, marketers may have misjudged the performance of video advertising they have purchased from Facebook over the past two years. It also may have impacted their decisions about how much to spend on Facebook video versus other video ad sellers such as Google’s YouTube, Twitter , and even TV networks.
Commission Junction is another great option because it allows you to become an affiliate for countless companies that you already know about (e.g., Overstock, Office Depot, Boscov’s, and many others).
In order to give advertisers more control over the delivery of in-stream video content, Facebook allows brands the option to choose Placement Controls, Category Blocking, a Pre-Campaign Publish List, and an App Block List. Advertisers also now have the ability to extend their reach by running their content across Facebook publisher’s apps and sites on Audience Network. These publishers include (but are not limited to) Time, Inc., Vice, and Univision. Although publisher reporting is not yet available, Facebook knows there is a need for advertisers to see how their content is performing across all placements, and they are currently working on creating a system for reporting from their partnered publishers.
Your post does give inspiration. I have just started and built my first site, the backlinking side is the hardest, it takes forever. Keep up the motivational posts, helps me keep going when my clicks = 0 for the day.
Hi Abdul! As you say, it’s really hard to figure out what to budget at first. It really depends on your niche and choice of keywords, and can range from five dollars per day to virtually any number you can imagine. It’s best to start researching your keywords or ad packages with the ad networks you’re interested in and see firsthand.
Cost effective: Marketing on the internet is cheap and you don’t have to worry about the production cost as the product is already developed by the seller. You don’t need a physical business location or hire employees either.
Its like when I was young and I read the “Emperor’s New Clothes”…. only a little boy could see that the Emperor riding on the horse was only in his undies…and if you continue to believe in this fable, that is all that you will have left.
I have seen so called gurus on Warrior Forum go bankrupt and absolutely broke. I keep bringing Warrior Forum again and again, because it is highlighted as the mecca for internet and affiliate marketing. The people who really are making money are those who are selling their products and services. A person who makes a product for say amazing SEO plugin for WordPress is making money. The affiliates are not. For example, Thesis WordPress theme by DIY Themes is surely making money, their affiliates are “sooooooo” many (emphasis supplied), that the entire market is chopped up and distributed amongst the 1000s of affiliates and what each gets in turn, are a few $100 at best (if at all).
If you purchase your domain and hosting from different companies, you will need to link the two together. Don’t panic, it’s a simple process. Check out our lesson: Linking your Domain with Your Hosting.
There are three ways to create an ad on Facebook: through Ad Creation, through the Power Editor as a New Campaign or through the Power Editor as a Quick Draft. However, the Power Editor is for more advanced users, so we will focus on Ad Creation.
With affiliate marketing, I started out just writing on Quora and sharing my experiences with no intentions of making any money. Pretty soon, my e-commerce answers caught some serious traction and there were obvious opportunities to provide more value to my readers.
Pay Per Sale or PPS – where companies pay a percentage of all sales that are qualified. These could be a percentage which was agreed by the company and it’s affiliate. Among the most common PPS program is the Amazon Associates where a publisher can earn up to 15% depending on the products that were sold. Here’s a list of places where you can find products to promote.
For merchants, affiliate network services provided often include reporting, tracking, payment and refund processing, affiliate management, and most importantly – access to a large base of publishers (affiliate marketers).
Facebook video ads will lead to more conversions when they include a call-to-action (CTA). The CTA will tell people what to do, such as ‘watch future videos to learn more’ or ‘stop by our store to buy these items’. The CTA can also direct viewers to discounts or coupons. Advertisers also have the option to redirect users to a dedicated landing page for relevant actions in the video (this works well for eCommerce stores).
