Most marketers have learned that their audience tends to be fairly blind to advertisements that are trying to overtly sell you something. If you want to keep people from scrolling past your ad, you’re wise to create content that connects with your target audience by offering them entertainment or interesting information.

Write honest, real reviews about products. Build up trust with your audience, and remember that they rely on your opinion. Don’t just point out all the positives of a product and gloss over the negatives. An honest opinion will be valued. Although publisher reporting is not yet available, Facebook knows there is a need for advertisers to see how their content is performing across all placements, and they are currently working on creating a system for reporting from their partnered publishers.

Facebook recently began measuring video consumption in “hours” rather than “total videos viewed” to give interested parties a more accurate comparison between Facebook and its largest video rival, YouTube. Facebook video statistics put the amount of Facebook videos watched at 100M hours per day (Recode), while Business Insider reports that YouTube earns roughly 6 times that amount (650M hours).

Affiliate marketing allows you, the affiliate, to be able to earn a commission on products or services you promote through your website for companies, or merchants.  Just about every single one of the tens of thousands of merchants you’ve shopped with online has an affiliate program.

Technically, a guy earning $300,000/month in revenue could be worse off than the guy making a steady $100/day with no outgoings. Admittedly he would have to be blind, dumb, deaf, drunk and stupid to continue swallowing such a skinny margin, but it highlights one of the rare laws of affiliate marketing:

This graph in Page Insights will show the level of user interest in different parts of a video. A spike in the views at certain points will indicate interest at particular moments, whereas a decline will showcase the part of the video where people stopped watching.

If an affiliate changes the terms of its program, your revenues could be directly affected. Choosing the wrong affiliates can also be problematic if your blog or website audience doesn’t feel compelled to buy their products or services. With the affiliate-marketing industry experiencing a boom, you’ll also have to contend with competition from other marketers shilling the same affiliate products.

Under most affiliate marketing arrangements, advertisers only pay for converted leads. There is basically no way they can lose money or get a negative ROI with this marketing method. Each new sale generated may have a thin margin after the affiliate payment is made, but it’s possible to structure in such a way that eliminates the possibility of a loss.

At the other end of the spectrum is the small merchant who is only willing or able to work with a handful of affiliates. In this case, the merchant and affiliate may come to an agreement and utilize a “low tech” solution to determine commissions earned (e.g., a custom referral path and an earnings powered by Google Analytics). This type of affiliate relationship will typically develop when there is a logical affiliate relationship between two parties, but the merchant isn’t interested in opening up the affiliate program to a wide range of partners via an affiliate network.
