Hey Tom, thanks for this tutorial – it’s a good thing to get a tutorial like this from a trusted person like you and not from the thousands of (sometimes) confusing articles about passive income/affiliate marketing/clickfunnels and what not that I come across from time to time, I am making a living as a web designer and I have been thinking of pivoting from design and creative work to focus on passive income but didn’t know where to start. This is the perfect foundation article I have seen so far and I ‘d like to ask if you have any further reading/guides/videos on affiliate marketing that you’d recommend. I like to do my deep research before starting 🙂 One more thing, there are some broken or missing images in this article, it could be my browser but check from your side too because there are quite a few images (e.g your Mercedes) that are missing. Thanks
Although the 8% commission may be a little high, and there is no guarantee that this many people will actually purchase the product within the affiliate window, it does illustrate that there is a great opportunity for affiliate links on Youtube.
Our aim is to encourage strategic lucrative partnerships between advertisers and publishers to monetise traffic, and our award winning Affiliate Managers are available 20 hours a day, 365 days a year to oil the wheels of these relationships.
Hey Steve, I loved this video. Really great work. The idea is also amazing. I use Camtasia Studio but this seems way easier for some cool videos with effects. Thanks! I am off to YouTube to give you a thumbs up for the video, it is definitely worth it
Putting a handy disclaimer in the bottom of your videos and on your about page or in your annotations covers you where this is concerned. Many big YouTubers have been using Affiliate Links to make money on YouTube for years.
I made cold calls to lists of expired clients, I went to lululemon (a clothing store) and gave free stretching workshops, I walked around the neighbourhood handing out flyers, I performed endless free sessions, I bought every manual on selling and marketing personal trainer services I could find, and I took on clients from deal of the day websites like Groupon. None of it worked!
I would love to get more guidance on how to increase affiliate clicks, track affiliate clicks, track actual sales (possible?), see which clicks/links produce the most sales and overall aspects of getting more out of your current traffic. The nitty gritty.
Fantastic workshop! The trainer was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about practical and powerful aspects of social media. I learned the difference between simply using the tools and leveraging them to meet my objectives. I can’t wait to try what I learned.
You partner with a company selling products/services you’d like to recommend to your audience in exchange for a commission. You sign up for their affiliate program, grab your customized affiliate links, and place them (usually) in your blog or YouTube videos. When people click your link and sign up for something on your affiliate’s website, you get a cut of it.
Affiliate marketing is an internet marketing channel where companies (sometimes referred to as advertisers or merchants) pay other people or companies based on their performance promoting an offering. Publishers can be individuals or companies that get paid for the providing leads or sales of products for the company.
However, if you have a favorite tool of your trade, a must-have gadget that will make your readers’ lives easier, or a high-quality recommendation that you’re sure people will be thrilled with, go ahead and offer it.

You’ve probably heard this a hundred times by people telling you to build an email list from the blogger and internet marketing crowd, but building an email list is way easier on a physical product oriented website.
Don’t let yourself be pressured into using “black hat” strategies to drive traffic to your site — e.g., aggressive SEO tactics that focus exclusively on tricking search engines instead of pleasing humans. This kind of activity can alienate your audience and get you banned from search engine listings.
Facebook suggests creating videos that are no longer than 15 seconds for the maximum impact. Your goal should be to deliver a quick message and then direct your viewers to platforms where they can learn more.
If an affiliate changes the terms of its program, your revenues could be directly affected. Choosing the wrong affiliates can also be problematic if your blog or website audience doesn’t feel compelled to buy their products or services. With the affiliate-marketing industry experiencing a boom, you’ll also have to contend with competition from other marketers shilling the same affiliate products.
Well did you know that the link you clicked on in that review is an affiliate link? That reviewer actually received a for connecting you to that product you were looking for. He didn’t have to ship it to you and doesn’t have to carry any inventory. He simply connected you to the product you were already looking for through his review and that is exactly what affiliate marketing is all about.
Anyone can become a ClickBank affiliate — it’s free. When you find a product that you wish to promote, either by searching the ClickBank marketplace or at a vendor’s website, you will be provided with a unique link which you can use to direct customers to the product page.
This is the first tip for making money with YouTube videos and affiliate links that you should follow if you are going to use the Amazon Marketplace. Remember that the affiliate links for the products that you promote on Amazon can be really long and will be pretty ugly if you put it on your video description. That’s why you should shorten your affiliate link to make it simpler and easier for people to click on it.If you choose to participate in the Amazon affiliate program, you should only use the link shortener provided by Amazon, not other link shortening services like bit.ly or private link shorteners like VTO.io. If you are participating in an affiliate program from other merchants, you should use the link shortener provided by them, if one is available.

Get familiar with the features and setup of an Amazon Associates account; learn how to become an Amazon Associate and have success with the program. Same here, this post kind of fell from the sky at such a great time. Been building a great community of readers over the years but reached a point where I’m losing money maintaining the site and newsletter. As you said, the ads don’t bring much -ironically I use Adblocks too but affiliate marketing always seemed like a weird and opaque subject. I’ve read many of Chris Guillebeau’s books in the last few months (this is how I discovered your site actually!) and I didn’t realize he had affiliate links for instance. Your post opened up a new window of possibility for me. Still need to process everything and do the work behind but a big thank you to you Sean!
You’re right, Javier – the Smart Blogger audience is mostly beginning and intermediate bloggers and online businesses. The merchant side is more of an advanced topic. But good suggestion. Maybe they’ll address the merchant side in the future.
So in a sense, both camps are right. The mechanical operation of Facebook marketing campaigns, whether organic or paid, will be automated to such a point over the coming years that the corresponding training will be miniscule. Complexity transfers from the user to the algorithm. Let lookalike audiences bring in the new customers, oCPM (optimized cost per thousand impressions) does the sub-targeting and bidding.
What’s the performance model that works best for you? If there is not a lot of traffic on your website, don’t expect to make a fortune in a pay per click model. However, if you have even a small group of loyal readers, there is a chance that they will buy a product you recommend (pay-per-sale should be your choice then).
Mark, WordPress isn’t just for blogging. You can build a static site using WordPress and have your blog integrated so users just need to click on a tab to see your latest posts. That works better than setting up a redirect or sending them to another site or having to cobble something together yourself. There are tons of additional plug-ins for WordPress to enhance its features and capabilities.
