A key part of this is tracking your sales and their origin. Remember that you won’t be able to monitor every single sale that comes in by hand — there will be too many, hopefully. You must have automatic tracking that shows you which particular products and which specific marketing efforts resulted in the most sales. That’s key for dialing in which products you should promote in the future and which marketing approach you should run with.
Of course you want affiliates with high commissions, but they should also have a solid reputation with high conversions and low reversal rates (you get $0 if people cancel after signing up). If they’re part of an affiliate marketplace like ShareASale or ClickBank you can see some numbers there. Companies likes Amazon/SiteGround are safe bets, otherwise do your research (or track your affiliate links so you can monitor their performance). Avoid affiliates with huge commissions since this probably they’re struggling to acquire/retain customers naturally. This will hurt your numbers (specifically your conversions/reversal rates).
Wouldn’t it be nice to never have an awkward sales meeting again? Imagine a sales meeting starting with, “I’ve heard great things about you, how do I start?” as opposed to, “so I got this coupon and figured I’d give it a shot”.
Are you not yet an affiliate to any company? Don’t worry, you can search on the internet for businesses that need affiliate marketers, and you sign up today to a member company’s website, and you are ready to go and start making money on youtube using your affiliate account.
I’ve been using Amazon’s affiliate program heavily for a little over two years now and the one thing I found through constant testing is that the layout of your website matters when it comes to how well it converts casual visitors into affiliate sales.
CPA marketing programs pay affiliates when a specific action is taken by the referral or lead. Common actions include clicks, impressions, form submits, sign-ups, registrations, or opt-ins. Since Cost-Per-Action models don’t necessarily involve a direct sale (and involve more risk taking) the payout percentages are far smaller than they are in Cost-Per-Sale.
Very informative. I left a comment because I know what it is like to spend hours or even days writing a great blog to not even have someone leave a simple comment one way or the other. I started making only something like $3.00 a month with Amazon affiliate when I first started, what a joke! I was about to quit when I read your article and like one other and found out there was real money to be made. Now I am making a million dollars a year…just kidding, I couldn’t even type that sentence with a straight face. Seriously though I have boosted my earnings to a high of around $96 to an average of like $45 a month with still isn’t much, but much better than my adsense earnings. Well good day and thanks for the insights.
That’s a great tip Sean, thanks! I was thinking about what you said in your post about some companies not putting that they have affiliate links and you having to do some digging and there are couple of companies/authors who made products I love and keep using, but I’m not sure how to go ahead and ask about the affiliate link. I read the post you linked below about asking for guest blogging, which I thought was a must-read, and so, if you think of doing a follow-up on this one, would love to read some of your tips and do’s and don’t about this. Thanks again, Sean, you’re doing some very inspiring work here!
Yes, you can. Same as any biz, you can do well if you have a good network, relationships and know how. Hard work doesn’t hurt either. But hell, what do I know, only did it for 6 years full time before we started WhatRunsWhere.com.
I was looking for great affiliate networks and wanted to know that which are the top 10 marketing networks. Then I read complete article. I was amazed to see that ClickBank ranks 1st among top 10 affiliate marketing networks. I’ve bookmarked this and want to read all other posts but due to time shortage I couldn’t But I’ll come daily to read every post one by one. Thanks admin for sharing such a great post with us.
The affiliate marketing scam is equal in size if not greater in size to the Nigerian 401 scam. Yes, you really have a person willing to give you $ 1 Million. BS you say? Then how come you buy the same BS packaged in a different way, when someone tells you how you can make millions in affiliate marketing by buying their
Don’t let yourself be pressured into using “black hat” strategies to drive traffic to your site — e.g., aggressive SEO tactics that focus exclusively on tricking search engines instead of pleasing humans. This kind of activity can alienate your audience and get you banned from search engine listings.

Cost-per-acquisition: you get paid a fixed or percentage-based commission every time someone buys from the advertiser using a link from your content. Cost-per-acquisition marketing is good for focused, high-quality content.

Freedom to choose offers: Outside of a few no-go niches (gambling and adult offers), you have pretty much all the freedom in the world to plug in any offer or website, especially after you’ve established trust by maintaining a non-spammy, high quality channel. It’s still not the same as owning your website, but close.
