Once you’ve got a niche all picked out, find some products that you can promote. There are websites full of these (called affiliate networks) to browse, and you can find advice here on how to choose the best ones for you. Once you’ve got a couple that are right for you, you’ll be able to get an affiliate link for them.
Thank you for detailed post. I am eagerly looking to start an affiliate website for Amazon products. Google search brought me on this page and I am happy to learn what the heck affiliate is all about. Looks like it is something I can do best now.
Are you thinking of becoming an affiliate marketer? Confused about how you can launch such a business? If your answer “yes” to both questions, you are at the right place to learn everything you need. The best answer to both questions would be this:
Hey Amy–great informative post, here. I am going to look into a few of these and choose wisely. I want to make sure I am building a really solid readership first before bombarding people with ads, but I think your explanation was SPOT ON. Thanks for that. And much agreed on the comment above–there are some sites I don’t even BOTHER with b/c I just feel like all they do is post various links so they make a profit. Some to the point where I’m like, “wheres the CONTENT????” Even pioneer woman didn’t get to where she is if the content wasn’t there. People aren’t dumb–they can smell a scam a mile away.
Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter were middle-of-the-pack finishers when it came to effectiveness. But one interesting result was that Snapchat was in last place for usage. Nearly 90% of respondents said they’d never used Snapchat’s video advertising features.
When promoting a product, you are also promoting the person or organization that owns the product. This should be the first thing to know before selecting the product you are promoting. You surely don’t want your clients to be unhappy after purchasing the product. Trust me; they will never come back to your site again to purchase anything! This is because you have dented your credibility. Normally, any company or website with good customer service is bound to have happy customers.
Are you planning on keeping EasyAzon for a while or will you be selling it to someone else, like the coupon code plugin. I’m asking this because I want to be assured that you’ll be supporting it with updates and not relying on a future owner who may or may not update it.
Step two: Add at least 10 videos to your channel to begin with. When people arrive on your channel and you have only 1 video, they will leave and never come back. Your goal is to get them to click on that subscribe button the moment they arrive.
These are some valid points to execute in our blog to make money with affiliate marketing, recently I started writing an Ebook for my blog to giveaway to my subscribers, earning money from affiliate marketing is not easy as we think if we don’t have huge email list.
Review sites feature reviews of products/services that the marketer has tried and can attest for. Each product/service review includes a link or banner ad that will take customers to the merchant partner’s website. The advantage of review sites is that they require less frequent updates. Marketers simply have to make minor tweaks to their websites to ensure that search engines continue to list the website in their search results.
Social media changes quickly, and next year will be no different, with many of the larger platforms testing new ad formats, and functionalities. As a brand, where you might once have been able to gain a lot of interest and traction organically on social media sites, it will prove more difficult in 2018 as the likes of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter seek to maximize revenues from advertising, and brands continue to recognize that advertising on social media is an extremely cost-effective way to reach a very niche and highly targeted audience.
You are a big help to me. I just made my blog and started doing affiliate marketing however I am struggling on the next step. I don’t know how will make people buy through my blog. It’s frustrating you know. What you said lifted up my spirit and I wish I can see sales next month or so. Cheers!
I have about 4 authority style sites and the rest are all mini ones. I like the money the mini’s can make but there isn’t any attractive exit strategy with those so that’s why I like to do a little of both, but I believe authority style sites have the biggest upside. As for income split I’d have to go back through all the tracking data but I’d peg it somewhat in favor of authority sites (before I sold one of my largest ones)
Technically, a guy earning $300,000/month in revenue could be worse off than the guy making a steady $100/day with no outgoings. Admittedly he would have to be blind, dumb, deaf, drunk and stupid to continue swallowing such a skinny margin, but it highlights one of the rare laws of affiliate marketing:
How do you deal with the fact that seen in a timeline there is no sound. Only if you actually open it do you get sound. Does that mean we should use text in combination with spoken words? I see this more and more often.

Hi I’ve tried to make money on Amazon. Had a great looking website but had no hits or anything in two months and when I called them to see why I’m not getting any hits they said to me do you have a domain name and I said no you guys never told me I needed one. So I closed my site and never tried again. I’m thinking of trying again maybe I might do it this time
Easy SEO (sometimes): Videos appear in 55% of keyword searches on Google. 82% of these videos are from YouTube. Because of lower competition on YouTube, it’s relatively easy to get your video ranked at the top of the SERPs.
Consumers are bombarded with videos every time they scroll through Facebook, so they make quick decisions on whether or not something is worth watching. If your ad doesn’t draw them in within the first few seconds, they will move on. Grab their attention right away with something that piques their interest and makes them curious enough to keep watching.
Compare this to a CPM-based advertising campaign, where an advertiser pays a fixed amount to get a fixed number of ad impressions. (E.g., they may pay $10,000 to have 1 million ads shown on a publisher site, or a $10 CPM.) That campaign may be unsuccessful however if the ad impressions don’t convert into clicks and/or eventual sales.
Before I took Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing, I had all the affiliate links up on my blog, but I wasn’t seeing many conversions. There is a right way AND a wrong way to use affiliate links, and Michelle walks you though all of that.
Action Item: If you know your niche and want to promote a physical product do a quick google search for “product name affiliate program” or “your niche affiliate program” to get an idea of what other options are out there.
It would be best to keep your ad shorter than one minute. You can make it a bit longer if it’s really spectacular, but make sure it keeps the viewer’s attention to the very end. If you have many things to say, it would be best to shoot few videos and promote them as separate ads.
There is a reason why many major merchants prefer to utilize affiliate marketing networks instead of setting up their own infrastructure. Just as the administrative burden can become overwhelming for publishers with multiple relationships in place, it can be too time consuming for merchants as well. Maintaining direct affiliate relationships involves building out an infrastructure to track referrals, calculate commissions, and process payments. While that may sound like a relatively straightforward process, it can become a major investment with plenty of potential complications and liability issues.
Hey Chris, great article. I was wondering if you have noticed anything different with your Amazon niche sites since the Google algo change? Have you lost traffic or you build the sites up so much that they have good content. I’m new at this and would be curious if you think people need to change anything.
Google Autocomplete – go to google.com, start typing a phrase and look at the dropdown autocomplete results. You can use the underscore character “_” to have Google fill-in-the-blank. Just make sure the last character you type is an underscore. Try using plurals and change the word ordering to see different results. This is how I find 90% of my keywords.
You’re right, Javier – the Smart Blogger audience is mostly beginning and intermediate bloggers and online businesses. The merchant side is more of an advanced topic. But good suggestion. Maybe they’ll address the merchant side in the future.
The internet offers boundless possibilities for earning a living online. Upwork and Freelancers Union found that 35% of the American workforce was doing some type of freelance work in 2016, and 73% said technology made it easier to find that work. One of the ways to harness the internet as an income source is pursuing affiliate marketing. It’s intended as a way to generate passive income, but does it really work? Let’s consider. (For more, see The Ultimate Working From Home Guide.)
I’m not sure of the exact reasons why I started to rank, but I have a few theories. It was a very long, honest, and informative post on the subject. I believe this made it stand out from all the other reviews in which the author just wrote up a basic summary of what it’s about. It also is one of the latest reviews on the book, so perhaps google freshness has something to do with it. I haven’t done any linkbuilding on this page and it currently sits at #2.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed at the beginning because the whole process isn’t exactly small, but you will never have to try to do everything at once. You can take it one step at a time, and when you do, you’ll find it’s not so difficult to get the wheels moving.
I sometimes use affiliate links on SteveScottSite.com. This means if you decide to make a purchase, I will get a sales commission. But that doesn’t mean my opinion is for sale. EVERY affiliate link on this site are to products that I’ve used and found useful. Please do your own research before making any purchase online.
Kashif, the best way to gain confidence is just to start doing it. Don’t worry as much about persuading people to buy. Worry first about creating something useful and genuine. The sales will come from there.
HI Sarah! I think you would love Michelle’s course – there is ABSOLUTELY potential. (Especially if you already have seen a tiny bit of income – you obviously have a good start! You just need to expand on that 🙂 )
It’s popular, and for good reason. People love video, and they will continue to love video for years to come. It’s a lasting medium and it’s your way to make your mark as a cutting-edge affiliate marketer.
This is the most important step in creating a successful YouTube channel. This does not mean, however, that you need a professional video editing studio and a $5,000 camera. While it is important to have clear and well edited audio and video, the most important aspect of these videos is the actual content itself. Providing a high quality, detailed and honest review of a product can be the determining factor of whether or not someone will purchase that product.
